The Big Impact of a Small School

I assumed the role of College Guidance Counselor and Student Activities Coordinator at The Beekman School in the summer of 2022. Through my leadership and daily involvement with the student body at The Beekman School, I have gained a deep appreciation for what our school offers and the ways in which I can meaningfully share my professional expertise. Over the years, I have witnessed students grow, thrive, and discover opportunities they may not have otherwise encountered; opportunities made possible by the individualized attention and close-knit nature our small school community provides.


As faculty members of a small school, we often undertake multiple roles, this flexibility allows us to form authentic, lasting relationships with our students. These relationships are especially critical during the college application process, which oftentimes can feel overwhelming, uncertain, and emotionally demanding. The experiences outlined below reflect the importance of truly knowing our students as individuals while guiding them through one of the most significant transitions of their academic lives.


The Beekman School operates on a rolling admissions model, welcoming students with diverse academic backgrounds, cultural identities, and personal interests throughout the year. Many of our students and families come from larger educational environments where individualized guidance is limited. In contrast, our program is intentionally designed to ensure that no student falls through the cracks. This philosophy is at the heart of our college counseling approach.


Building meaningful relationships is best realized in a small school setting. By taking the time to understand our students’ academic histories, personal challenges, strengths, and aspirations, the school is better equipped to provide targeted resources and realistic guidance. This personalized support encourages students and helps them feel seen, understood, and confident as they navigate the college application process.


Advocacy is a critical component of this relationship-based approach. Because we know our students well, we are able to write authentic letters of recommendation that highlight their growth over the years, resilience, and potential beyond grades and test scores. Students’ mental health and well-being are key considerations. Recognizing personal setbacks or life circumstances is crucial, and should not define students educational goals. In building meaningful relationships, we can intervene early, provide appropriate accommodations, and support students holistically. Students are empowered to pursue higher education with confidence, self-awareness, and the assurance that they are supported every step of the way.


I see myself as a lifelong learner, and welcome the opportunity to continue learning from the experiences that inspired my appreciation for the uniqueness of serving the Beekman community through the college application process.
