Many of us are looking for a school with classrooms where students and adults seek the truth, expand their minds by embracing challenging ideas, and build empathy by seeking to understand the ideas of others. As a result of my over twenty years of experience as a history, government, and economics teacher, I have come to believe that students should believe the material they learn matters and that their education has a purpose.
How can parents know if a school is providing a good education? Who monitors the quality of an academic program to ensure that students are receiving the kind of preparation they need? There are several organizations whose responsibility it is to establish an accredited high school. These can be local, state, regional, or national organizations. Also, it is possible to identify an accredited online high school.
Rolling admissions means that you can enroll is a school at any point throughout the academic year. While some schools may want you to wait until the beginning of a new marking period, others will allow you to join classes when you’re ready.
In our experience, if a student is unhappy in a current school then the situation usually deteriorates as the year progresses. The longer a student remains in an inappropriate placement, the larger the portion of a student’s final grade will be consumed by those poor grades.
By the time students reach high school, if there is a need for therapy, it has been identified and a list of requested accommodations has been outlined. Often times, these students have already started working with private counselors or therapists outside of school and/or enrolled in special programs or support services after the school day.
The Beekman School is a coed, college preparatory high school that opened in 1925. We offer small classes averaging 6 students with one-to-one classes and distance learning available so that students with a myriad of specific requests are able to create an academic program. Our dedicated faculty returns year after year to encourage and support teenagers on their individual paths toward achieving personal goals.
Applications for private high school admissions may vary slightly from school to school, but there are several components that will remain constant regardless of where you apply. Making a personal statement is one of those basics, so my first advice is - don’t cheat.
In just a couple of months, students will be notified about their private high school acceptances. Just like during the college admissions process, you likely applied to several schools and you can soon see what your choices are once all of the results are in.
If you are the parent of an 8th grader, you are probably in the midst of asking yourself the question, “How do I choose the right high school for my child?” From asking friends & fellow parents to performing an internet search to going to open houses, you are certain to be presented with a lot of options. Most (if not all) of them will sound like great places for your child to learn. So what makes a school the “right” school?
You will find several options available as you look for the school that best fits your needs. Be careful, however, because the diploma you think you are getting may not be useful for your goals.
The first thing you want to establish is if the school you are investigating is an accredited high school or an accredited online high school and, if it is, which organization accredits it.
What is an accredited high school?
A weighty concern on many teenagers' minds right now is, "How strong is my high school preparation for college?" Certainly, part of the responsibility for college readiness lies with the student: to best prepare for college while in high school, should you take college-level classes in high school or utilize some other tool?
